VI Urban and Landscape Days at the Estonian Academy of Arts

TIMEWIDE: Thinking the city in deep scale
23.-25.4.2009 Kanuti Gildi Hall, Pikk tn 20, Tallinn, Estonia

TIMEWIDE reshapes urban thought and design practices – looking deep in time and wide in space. What if we put our work in the light of fundamental questions of birth and death of civilisations? Or, what if we start our design-thinking from very large scale, from Europe-wide forms of landscape, such as the Rhine Valley?

The VI Urban and Landscape Days bring together international experts of archaeology, urban studies, architecture, landscape architecture and art history. The programme consists of keynote lectures, discussions and tactical workshops in Tallinn region. A special track on the notion of over-determined image and a PhD workshop is organised.

A special PhD workshop in image theory and visual methodology is organised, with a separate registration.

Keynotes: Luke Engleback (UK) "Ecourbanism - a low carbon response to climate change and the post peak oil scenario" Christopher TenWolde (USA/Finland) "Human Spaces - Urban Culture as a Social Landscape" Isabella Pasqualini (Switzerland) "Urban jam - flows, forward memory and territorial performance" Aaro Söderlund (Finland) "Environment vs Humankind" Nathalie Beekman (Holland) "Invisible Cities" Luis Urbano (Portugal) „One school. One building.” Chris Moller (New Zealand/Holland) „From tree to tree - evolving architecture” Joao Figueira (Portugal) "Determination and over-determination in Holl's entry for Kiasma"

We especially hope that the PhD workshop gathers interested post-graduate students from fields of art theory, art history, architecture, urbanism, geography, cultural studies, sociology, psychology and philosophy.

TIMEWIDE is organised by the Chairs of Urban Studies and Urban Landscapes at the Estonian Academy of Arts. Further inquiries: Lilia Del Rio, urban@artun.ee, tel. 642 0071, www.urbanistika.ee

Open Lecture series 2009:

"In Search of Traces of the Self: Urban Space in Finnish Literature at the Turn of the 20th Century"

Lecture by Lieven Ameel (BE/FIN) Thursday 19th february, 17:30-19:00. Pikk tn. Saal

Under the frame of narratives and city experiences, the lecture will focus on feelings of unhomeliness, inability to navigate the city, the shock of arrival, walking experiences, and traces of the fl?neur, all related to a selection of Finnish novels at the turn of the 20th century.

Lieven Ameel, originally from Belgium, began to befriend Helsinki by walking its streets; later this relationship turned into a scientific study. He is currently writing his doctoral dissertation on Finnish Literature entitled „Koettu ja kuviteltu Helsinki suomenkielisessä proosakirjallisuudessa 1900–1945“ studying what Finnish literature in 1900–1945 reveals about how people experienced and imagined Helsinki. Open Lecture series 2009:

"Web 2.0 and urban planning - towards the social production of place"

Lecture by Peter Tattersall Thursday 5th february, 17:30-19:00. Pikk tn. Saal

Things are changing. Web 2.0 services such as Wikipedia, YouTube, Flickr, and open source projects such as Linux, and virtual worlds such as Second Life or World of Warcraft are becoming an everday part of our lives. They all show the way to a new form of production, whereby the end user is no longer a passive recipient of experts creations and decisions, but rather an active player in the collaborative creation of complex systems. What does this new form of production ("co-production") mean for urban planning and architecture? Peter Tattersall will present some experiments conducted to show how cities and buildings could be designed by their inhabitants, and explores issues relating to the idea of the "open-source city".

Peter Tattersall has been involved in Wiki urban planning in Helsinki, as part of the Megapolis 2023 conference. Wiki planning is part of a wider attempt to understand what the implications of web 2.0 and the new economy might be for planning and architecture.

The lecture takes place at the Central Hall of the new location of the Faculty of Architecture from the Estonian Academy of Arts at Pikk tn. 20, 3rd floor, Tallinn (Old town, Kanuti gildi building).

This is part of the Open Lecture series in Urban Studies in the spring term, which deal with themes relating to a variety of disciplines with discussion on cities. Updates on next lectures and timetable at www.urbanistika.ee

CALL FOR PAPERS - 5th Urban Studies Days:

Changing ahead of time – toolkit of urban activism

24 - 25 April 2008 Tallinn, Estonia

Last year, under the title of „Research and Activism” the Days showed the active work of many involved in activism, urban development and interventions. This year, we intend to join the international participants, with their backgrounds and personal careers, into a set of workshops and round tables in with the opportunity to actively share experiences and create ideas of interventions which can be furtherly developed in Tallinn and beyond.

Connected with the lecture series on Urban Futurology at the Academy during the spring, the Days’ workshops will focus on planning and acting for the future, roughly in three steps: Awareness, prevention and preparedness.

The participants of the Days will be arranged according to their interest of action, to prepare for an interventional plan, whether in a physical shape or in a figurative sense, that can work as a toolkit for positive and forward-looking activism in different cities, neighbourhoods or situations.

Key note speakers and programme will be announced in March.

4th Urban Studies Days : Research and Activism

The Chair of Urban Studies organised the 4th annual Urban Studies Days with the theme "Research and Activism". The event took place in Tallinn in April 25-26, 2007. With an international audience and 17 presenters from all over europe, the event focused in cases where activism made a difference, groups that use alternative tactics and new tools to facilitate participatory processes. The development of Tallinn lead also to interesting debates on urban regeneration through culture and arts, the difference between interventions and activisms, and to questioning the quality of environments.

Keynote by Dipl. Pol. Volker Eick was titled "Neoliberalism and Urban Space: Activism, Atavism and Aspiration"

After the event we have compiled the papers presented into the Conference Proceedings, including the transcription of the keynote speech.
